global project: living in the Anthropocene

I chose Anthropocene to be my ‘global’ project research theme. Since my interest has been on the interconnectedness of environmental issues and human status, after attending lectures on the concept of the Anthropocene, it seemed natural for me to pursue some creation within this theme.  

local project: Japanese theatre masks and culture of honne/tatemae

I chose my theme of research for ‘local to global’ project to be masks. I wanted to learn the history of masks in Japan to begin with, as I thought it has a broad aspect. Learning the history of masks took me into numbers of side-tracking; watching the masked theatre performances and extended stories around them, and it has become too interesting to stop.

Researching masks in my home country Japan led me to explore the long history of mask-making in Japan, and I learned that we had influences from India, China and Korea, like so many other things throughout history.
